Why am I more focused towards ‘upcycled’ goods – Nidhi Khatri
“Upcycling is no longer just a niche market, but also empowers consumers to make conscious purchasing decisions.”
Upcycling is the process of taking unwanted materials or products and transforming them into something of higher value, often with a creative twist. Where recycling, which typically breaks materials down to create new products, upcycling preserves the integrity of materials, giving them a second life.
As a proud owner of a textile goods brand, I’ve seen firsthand how small changes can make a significant impact, not only on our environment but also in the way we think about consumption.
My journey into the world of sustainable fashion and upcycling began with studying textile design, a field that opened my eyes to the rich history and intricate techniques used to create the fabrics and products we encounter in our daily lives. Growing up, I never gave much thought to how the clothes I wore or the things I interacted with were made. They were simply items I used, without understanding the craftsmanship, artistry, and labor that went into them. However, as I delved deeper into designing, I became fascinated by the various textile techniques that have been used for centuries — from weaving and knitting to embroidery, dyeing, and printing. Each of these techniques tells a story of innovation and creativity, and learning about them made me appreciate the materials I took for granted every day.
However, I was struck by the stark contrast between the artistry of textile design and the environmental damage caused by mass production. I began to understand the environmental impact of fast fashion — from the excessive use of water, chemicals, and energy in textile production, to the overwhelming amount of textile waste that ends up in landfills.
This realization led me to shift my focus toward the importance of sustainable textile practices and ethical fashion. I found myself eager to explore how sustainable textile design could transform everyday products, by making them more durable, functional, and stylish. This deeper understanding also ignited a passion for eco-friendly fashion and upcycling, as I began to see the endless possibilities for reusing and repurposing materials.
Upcycling, in particular, provides a solution to the growing waste crisis by giving new life to old, discarded materials and reducing the need for new resources. This sustainable approach not only reduces waste but also promotes a more conscious and mindful way of consuming fashion. It is this philosophy that drives my passion as I continue to design and create eco-friendly, upcycled fashion and sustainable textiles goods. By combining traditional textile techniques with modern sustainable practices, I believe we can create a fashion industry that values quality over quantity, creativity over consumption, and sustainability over waste.
My journey has taught me that when we embrace the richness of textile history and the principles of sustainability, we can make a positive, lasting impact on the environment and the world of fashion. If you’re a consumer who cares about the planet, consider choosing upcycled products next time you shop. If you’re a business owner, I encourage you to explore how upcycling can fit into your business model and help make your operations more sustainable. Together, we can build a future where waste is minimized, and creativity knows no bounds.
